Parish books stored in the municipal offices (Zámrsk archive)

I often stumble upon a question where to find parish books which are not yet in the archives. I wrote a guide how to find in which municipal office the parish books are stored, but there are other ways how to find out.

Zámrsk archive offers information about parish books stored in the municipal office - you can find it on their website. There is a list available which covers all the parish books till 1949 which are still stored in the municipal offices in the former Easter Bohemian region.

The website contains link to the PDF file which covers all these books. It's in Czech (no surprise) and the parish books are divided by a district and then by the municipal office.

Which districts are covered?

  • Havlíčkův Brod
  • Hradec Králové
  • Chrudim
  • Pardubice
  • Svitavy
  • Ústí nad Orlicí
  • Žďár nad Sázavou (just one municipal office)
The best way how to search the PDF file is by town/village name or by parish name. But - you have to search the properly written Czech name of the town/village.

Here is an example from the PDF:

Municipal office where the parish books are stored is mentioned in the beginning (Luže, okr. Chrudim - Luže in Chrudim district). The list then shows type of the parish book (N - births, O - marriages, Z - deaths), to which parish office it belonged (Farní úřad), what area it covers (územní rozsah), original number (původní signatura) and time span of the parish book (last column).

You can then use Google or Wikipedia to get the e-mail address of the municipal office and kindly ask them to provide you the information about your ancestors. But don't forget - they are not obliged to send it to you by e-mail.

  1. Thank you for this. It seems a few people have been asking about this lately.

  2. thank you for this site, as a beginner researching my Czech family and unable to read the language it is amazing.
